Emperor Beld was once a hero, one of the six who saved Lodoss from darkness thirty years ago. In that endeavor, Beld's soul was tainted by darkness. He came into possession of the Demon Sword, the dark counterpart to King Fahn's Holy Sword. Following this, he ascended to rule the dark kingdom of Marmo.

Influenced by his own darkness and Karla's subtle guidance, Beld would command an invasion of Lodoss. He anticipated that attacking Valis would compel King Fahn to respond, which indeed happened. The former allies met for the final time, their confrontation determining Lodoss's fate. Initially, it seemed Beld would deliver the decisive blow, but Karla intervened, ensuring neither emerged victorious. With Beld's fall, Ashram rises to inherit a tumultuous Marmo throne.
