He was kidnapped by the Mafia, led by Mello, to be used as a hostage in exchange for the Death Note that the Japanese police had. Takimura was later discovered dead, having been strangled with his own tie. As a result, Mello organized the kidnapping of Sayu Yagami, the daughter of Deputy Soichiro Yagami, demanding the Death Note in return.
According to "Death Note: How to Read 13," it is confirmed that he was killed by Kira (Light Yagami), although Light does not explicitly confirm this in his thoughts or conversations within the manga. Near and Mello speculate that his death could have been either caused by Kira or possibly a suicide.
