Akio's fiancée, daughter of the school's Trustee Chairman. She feels uneasy around Anthy, who intentionally keeps her distance from Kanae. During her Black Rose interview, Kanae discloses that she finds Anthy creepy and unbearable. Her distrust towards Anthy fuels Kanae's hatred during her Black Rose duel with Utena, initiating the cycle of the Black Rose duels.
In the Final Saga of the manga, Kanae becomes a "Body Without Soul"; she neither moves nor speaks and is always with Akio.
Kanae makes only brief appearances in the Utena movie. She is seen dancing with Akio and later appears mourning over his body when it is found in the rose garden.
