A shrine maiden and Kikyo's younger sister, Kaede protected her village for fifty years following her sister's demise. She was the first to recognize Kagome as the reincarnation of Kikyo. Kaede frequently shares her wisdom and knowledge about demons and other spiritual phenomena with InuYasha’s group. Highly respected by Kagome, Sango, Shippō, Miroku, and occasionally even InuYasha, she is a valued member of their team. Despite his often irritable nature, InuYasha does listen to her advice when it is truly needed. A common misunderstanding is that Kaede lost her right eye during InuYasha’s assault on the village to seize the sacred jewel. However, in the two-part anime flashback episodes titled "The Tragic Love Song of Destiny," it is revealed that she lost her eye during an attack by a yokai. At this time, Kikyo realized that her feelings for InuYasha had weakened her spiritual powers, making her unable to adequately protect Kaede, which led to the loss of her eye.
