As the class representative of 2-C, Hanai takes his responsibilities very seriously, always striving to keep his classmates, especially the boys, in check. He speaks his mind without hesitation, regardless of the consequences. His love for Yakumo is so intense that she can practically read his thoughts from a mile away.
During his childhood, Hanai was shy, weak, and often bullied by other children. However, with some help from Mikoto, who has been his friend since then, he overcame these challenges. They both attend the same dojo, and Hanai holds a black belt in Kenpo. Despite his best efforts to join the Tea Club that Yakumo is part of, he is consistently barred by Akira.
Although Hanai and Mikoto have their own romantic interests, those around them sometimes speculate that they are too close to be just friends. Some of his classmates, like Yuuki, seem to have a crush on him.
