He greatly admires Frau and Castor. As a member of the Oak family, Hakuren chose the path of a Bishop rather than following the family tradition of entering politics or the military. He is Shuri Oak's cousin. At times, he can come across as vain and self-centered, yet he is very gentle and thoughtful. Hakuren is also diplomatic, studious, and strong-willed. Despite his kindness, he occasionally enjoys mocking people who annoy him. While Hakuren's greatest strength lies in his intellect, he is also highly skilled with his attacking Zaiphon and has shown considerable athletic ability. Hakuren's aspiration to become a Bishop stems from a desire to help people and to take revenge against his father. Although he has rebelled against the Oak family, he still takes pride in his name, as evidenced by his offense when Teito insulted his family by calling them 'spineless Oaks'. Hakuren explicitly states that he dislikes women and feels ill around them, except for his mother and Lazette. This aversion stems from childhood trauma caused by his father showing him numerous photo albums of potential brides. He refers to this condition as 'joseiyoi'. Initially, Hakuren and Teito did not get along well, exchanging insults shortly after meeting. However, their relationship evolved after they became roommates. Hakuren's opinion of Teito changed when he saw Teito's sklave mark and when Teito risked his life to save him. Hakuren holds Teito dear, calling him his "dear comrade" and his "light". According to Mikhail, Hakuren's voice has a soothing effect on Teito. Hakuren often assumes a motherly role towards Teito but also enjoys teasing him, though not as much as Frau and Mikage do. After passing the Bishop's exam and becoming Castor's apprentice, Hakuren received an invitation from the Barsburg royal family to become the princess's tutor. Initially refusing, he reconsidered after visiting a poor hospital and learning about injustices within the military. He decided to take the opportunity to change the empire from within, believing he could help more people this way. Despite his aversion to women, his new role requires him to work for a woman, alongside three other women. Surprisingly, he gets along well with all of them except Gyokuran, who shares his views on men. Later in the manga, it is revealed that the Oak family is the God House of District 2, making Hakuren a descendant of the Ghost, Relikt. This also reveals his blood relation to Lance.
