Lieutenant Yamada is a Japanese-American soldier assigned a mission to eliminate Akira and Tetsuo in the story's latter part, following Akira's destruction of Neo-Tokyo. Yamada intends to use darts laced with a biological toxin to kill the two formidable psychics.

Later, he teams up with U.S. Marines to execute the plan at the Olympic Stadium, which has become the headquarters for Akira and Tetsuo's Great Tokyo Empire. However, the biochemical weapons prove ineffective against Tetsuo, instead temporarily granting him control over his expanding powers again. He then proceeds to kill Yamada.
