Kaoru's Grandfather. The scars on Kaoru's back were caused by Gen'ichiro violently hitting him with a bamboo cane when Kaoru tried to protect the mementos of his deceased mother.
When Kaoru returned to Hanabishi for a chance to become its heir again, he found his grandfather to be a sick and weak old man. Gen'ichiro didn't even recognize Kaoru as his grandchild, mainly because Kaoru's brother had been pretending to be Kaoru.
Gen'ichiro's dying wish was for the Hanabishi clan to be inherited by the man who married Aoi. Kaoru's brother kept this secret to his own advantage.
