Gharnef is the creator of the Imhullu spell, which renders him immune to attacks. However, a magician using the Starlight spell, created by his former master Gotoh, can defeat him. He was once a star pupil of Gotoh alongside Miloah. Due to his lack of compassion, he was deemed unfit to inherit the Aura spell. Driven by jealousy, Gharnef stole the Darksphere, an act that warped his soul. From it, he crafted the Imhullu spell. Later, he visited a war-ravaged orphanage and exploited the despair of Eremiya, the orphanage's bishop. He erased her memories and bewitched her into training orphans as assassins through brutal means. Eventually, he set his plans in motion. By killing Miloah, he seized control of Khadein. He revived Medeus and the Dolhr Empire and manipulated Michalis into killing his father by spreading a rumor that King Osmond intended to name Minerva as his successor. Collaborating with Dolhr and their allies to conquer the world, Gharnef planned to ultimately betray them, intending to crush Medeus with the Imhullu spell and the Falchion. He led the attack on Altea, possibly killing Marth's father Cornelius, to obtain the Falchion and kidnap Elice, thereby gaining access to the Aum Staff. However, Marth later defeated him and slew Medeus. Despite this, Gharnef's soul remained within the Darksphere, allowing his followers to eventually return his soul to the land of the living, though without a physical body.
