Hikitsu is a Genbu Celestial Warrior, originating from the Han Tribe, an ethnic minority in western Hokkan. His real name is Emthatt Chen, born under the star Dipper. As a Celestial Warrior, he has the power to control water in the form of snakes. However, he also possesses a second uncontrollable ability called Shikyokan, which forces anyone who looks into his eye to relive their worst memories.
Hikitsu is typically reserved and distant towards everyone except his sister Aira and his best friend Tomite, whom he saved during an attack that resulted in the death of Tomite's father. Initially, Hikitsu refuses to join Takiko because he is guarding Aira, who is frozen in a block of ice. After being reunited with Tomite, Hikitsu agrees to join them once Aira is freed. Though he initially interacts minimally with his fellow Celestial Warriors aside from Tomite and shows particular fondness for Namame, Hikitsu gradually begins to open up to them, proving to be a valuable friend and companion. Alongside Inami, he serves as a voice of reason within the group and is an effective fighter, capable of assessing situations and agreeing with Inami that retreating during a battle to protect villagers is often the best course of action.
In the original Fushigi Yuugi, Hikitsu and Tomite become guardians of the Shinzaho of the Priestess of Genbu, the necklace given to Takiko by the Oracle Anlu, after their deaths. While he takes his duty seriously, Hikitsu speaks candidly with Miaka about the Shinzaho when confronted by the Celestial Warriors of Suzaku.
