As an ESWAT member, Deunan excels in weapons handling, explosive device manipulation, hand-to-hand combat, and is a top-notch Landmate pilot. According to the Appleseed Databook, she is trained to be ambidextrous. In the original manga, Briareos, her lover and partner, was already a cyborg before Deunan arrived at Olympus. She lost an eye due to a training accident in Volume 4. However, in the 2004 movie adaptation, it's depicted that Briareos becomes a cyborg only after he leaves on a mission and is presumed missing by Deunan.
The following information is derived from the 2004 movie adaptation. Deunan, the daughter of Carl and Dr. Gilliam Knute, is recognized as a highly skilled warrior who has spent most of her life fighting a war that had largely ended. She is captured by an ES.W.A.T. team in a devastated city and subsequently evacuated from the Badlands. There, she reunites with her former lover Briareos, who is part of the recovery team and now a cyborg, having lost over 75% of his natural body to injuries. During this time, she also befriends a girl named Hitomi.
The day after being brought to the city of Olympus, Deunan discovers that more than half of the city's population consists of artificial humans known as Bioroids. She learns that her new friend, Hitomi, is one of them. Soon, Deunan finds herself involved in a conflict between a faction of humans and Olympus, as some humans aim to eradicate the Bioroids completely. When sent on a mission to retrieve the Appleseed, she uncovers details about her past and a larger conspiracy.
