He is the Meister of Patricia "Patti/Patty" Thompson and Elizabeth "Liz" Thompson, and the son of Death. Born from a fragment of Shinigami's soul, Kid was initially isolated due to his lineage. His fellow students at Shibusen were wary of approaching him, fearing both his status as Shinigami's son and potential harm. This isolation persisted until he formed a partnership with Liz and Patti, who became close allies and provided much-needed support. Through them, Kid experienced genuine friendship for the first time, something he deeply appreciates.
Kid suffers from Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD), manifesting as an intense obsession with perfection and symmetry. Symmetrical environments can distract him during missions, leading to breakdowns if asymmetry is detected. He becomes distressed by even minor asymmetries, such as a crooked picture frame or improperly folded toilet paper, often correcting these issues immediately, sometimes at the expense of his current mission. His OCPD affects his combat readiness; he refuses to engage in battles unless everything is symmetrical, even going so far as to avoid fighting symmetrical enemies to preserve their balance. The three white stripes on the left side of his hair cause significant distress, leading him to label himself "useless asymmetrical garbage" when pointed out. Despite attempts to dye his hair symmetrically, the Sanzu Lines reappear due to his body rejecting artificial coloring.
Kid's favorite number is 8, chosen for its symmetry and divisibility. An example of his fixation occurred when he met Soul on his first day at DWMA. Upon hearing Soul mention the number 7, Kid insisted on changing it to 8, emphasizing its superior symmetry. His obsession with order was labeled "Madness of Order" in the Book of Eibon. Despite this, Kid tolerates some asymmetries, such as his father's cloak or his martial art stance, prioritizing his love for his father over his disorder.
Generally mature and precise, Kid remains calm and collected, allowing others their own choices regarding symmetry. However, his obsession can lead to childish outbursts. His serious demeanor makes him unaffected by nudity, unlike other male characters. During a battle with a nearly naked enemy, Kid remained focused, showing no interest despite Patti's misinterpretation. This may also stem from his asexuality, inherited from his father, who shows no attraction to either gender. Kid's indifference to nudity was further demonstrated when Blair's towel fell off in front of him, causing disgust rather than arousal.
Kid enjoys socializing and cares deeply for his friends, expressing concern about Soul's scar and threatening Gopher for threatening Maka. He values his partnership with Liz and Patti, who share a strong connection and admiration for him. Although somewhat introverted, Kid maintains a solid relationship with his weapons, working efficiently on missions despite not having as close a bond with Maka or Black☆Star.
Maka notes that matching soul wavelengths with more than one weapon is challenging, but Kid excels due to his skills and the bond between Liz and Patti. As a Shinigami, Kid doesn't need to collect souls, yet he pursues this goal to create his ideal weapon. Due to using two weapons, he must collect twice the required souls: 198 evil human souls and two Witch souls. Kid shares a rivalry with Black☆Star, displaying greater strength but possibly being more susceptible to madness. This susceptibility might stem from his OCPD or his desire for a perfect world.
Despite his obsession with symmetry hindering his performance, Kid has good intentions. He aims to follow in his father's footsteps, striving to make the world safer and more peaceful. His journey is marked by challenges and growth, driven by his determination to achieve perfection and protect those he cares about.
