The 14-year-old protagonist of the story is a typical schoolboy who harbors a crush on Risa Harada, a girl from his school. However, due to his family's unique heritage, his DNA merged with that of the legendary phantom thief, Dark, when Risa rejected him.
Daisuke involuntarily transforms into Dark whenever he experiences feelings of love or intimacy. While Daisuke is kind-hearted and tries to prevent Dark from pulling off reckless stunts, these efforts are usually in vain. As the series progresses, Daisuke begins to fall for Riku Harada, the older twin sister of his former crush. Despite not appearing or acting like it, Daisuke is highly perceptive and athletic, capable of making jumps that would be impossible for an average boy. His family sets up daily life-threatening trials for him after school to sharpen his skills, including his talent for lockpicking and hacking electronic locks.
As a Niwa, Daisuke has been trained in thievery his entire life. He can dodge traps, pick locks, sneak past security, and infiltrate almost any location. Yet, despite his abilities, he prefers creating art rather than stealing it.
