Clow Reed is the magician who originally created the Clow Cards and their magical guardians, Cerberus and Yue. Born to an English father and a Chinese mother, Clow developed a unique form of magic that combined both Eastern and Western elements. His intention was to pass on this magic to those who would use and protect it, but very few individuals could master his techniques. Clow appears only in flashbacks, as he had been deceased long before the series began, and little is revealed about his personality or life. Knowing his time was near, Clow chose his unborn descendant, Sakura Kinomoto, to become the new guardian of the cards and the new master of Yue and Cerberus. With his foresight, Clow planned many scenarios that would help Sakura succeed in fully possessing the Clow Cards. He made the sealing wand pink, anticipating its future user would be a young girl. Additionally, Clow split his soul into two reincarnations: Eriol Hiiragizawa, who retained all of Clow's memories and magic, and Fujitaka Kinomoto, Sakura’s father. In the anime adaptation, Clow only splits his soul into one reincarnation. In the first anime film, "Madoushi," the spirit of a woman who had argued fiercely with Clow over the proper use of magic is introduced. After her death, she continued their feud by embedding her spirit into a book. When Sakura accidentally releases her, Madoushi refuses to believe Clow is dead and attacks Sakura and her friends for trying to deceive her. Once Sakura convinces her that Clow has passed away, the spirit realizes she truly loved Clow rather than hated him. Accepting his death, her spirit vanishes.
