Byakuya is Naraku's ninth and final detachment, designed to take over from Kagura. His primary role is to monitor the increasing powers of InuYasha and Mōryōmaru and report his findings back to Naraku. Byakuya possesses an extraordinary ability to create illusions, but he also wields a variety of other formidable powers: he can manipulate others using paper soldiers, summon vines to ensnare his foes, teleport individuals to different dimensions, detach parts of his own body, and erect protective barriers. He traverses distances on a giant origami paper crane.
After absorbing the power from one slash of InuYasha's Meidou Zangetsuha, Byakuya uses the blade to wound Kagome. However, before he can strike again, InuYasha counters with his Meidou Zangetsuha, drawing Byakuya into it. Upon Naraku's demise, a Meidou emerges behind Kagome, triggered by the residual effects of Byakuya's Meidou Blade.
