As the leader of the Shichinintai, also known as the Band of Seven, Bankotsu was called "great big brother" by the other six members. This title was given to him because he was both the strongest member and the founder of the group, despite being the youngest. He reclaimed his massive halberd, Banryuu, from a castle whose former lord had been involved in a plot to eliminate the Shichinintai due to their overwhelming strength and the fear they instilled among rogue military leaders. Lifting Banryuu required the combined strength of three of the lord's strongest soldiers, yet Bankotsu wielded it effortlessly with one hand. In melee combat without his Tessaiga, even InuYasha found himself significantly challenged when facing off against Bankotsu.
