He is known for being lecherous, unintelligent, and lazy. Despite his frequent attempts to escape from Lum and his flirtations with other women, he genuinely has feelings for her. Ataru's primary ambition in life is to be the center of a harem filled with exotic and beautiful women, including Lum and most of her alien friends. His pickup methods would likely unsettle even the most persistent stalkers; he typically approaches a woman he has never met before and immediately asks for her name, phone number, and address. Once he sets his sights on a particular woman, almost no force—whether earthly or extraterrestrial—can deter him. Though he would never openly admit it, later episodes reveal that deep down, Lum is the one he truly loves.
