The protagonist of the series is the last surviving member of the Ashura clan. Ashura was born after Taishaku-ten murdered his father and took the throne. His mother, Shashi, simultaneously gave birth to Taishaku-ten's son, Ten-ou, and attempted to kill Ashura, believing he would obstruct her path to ruling Heaven alongside Taishaku-ten. However, Ashura's powers shielded him, enclosing him in a cocoon where he remained undisturbed for three hundred years until Yasha-ou awakened him.
When freed from his cocoon, Ashura initially appears as a baby but quickly matures into an eight-year-old child. At first outgoing and friendly, he soon becomes aware of his cruel destiny as Taishaku-ten has almost everyone close to him killed. Overcome with guilt for their deaths, Ashura vows to become strong enough to defeat Taishaku-ten himself.
However, Ashura harbors another side: He is the "true Ashura," the merciless god of war who seeks the complete annihilation of Heaven, Earth, and Hell. This destructive aspect was suppressed by several seals, one of which involved distributing his true power among the Six Stars. These seals are lifted upon their meeting. Ultimately, it is his love for Yasha-ou, his adoptive father, that triumphs over his desire for destruction.
As punishment for his father's sins, Ashura was born genderless, preventing him from continuing the royal line of Ashura. Ashura-ou desperately wished to preserve this lineage and tried to defy destiny. Languages without a gender-neutral pronoun often refer to Ashura using either male or female pronouns, leading to much debate over the correct choice.
