Anthony Lester, whose real name is Anthony Carter, is the seasoned Captain of a special forces squad and currently holds the position of second-in-command and operational leader of the SPK. Besides handling urgent matters, he consistently assists Near. Lester is an exceptionally honest individual who has earned Near's complete trust, often being privy to some of Near's thoughts and plans. He helps Near with tasks that are unfamiliar to him, such as booking flights.
Lester is frequently referred to as "Commander Lester." Although he cannot match Near's intelligence and analytical skills, his trustworthiness, athleticism, and quiet demeanor make him invaluable in assisting Near. According to "How to Read," Lester can be seen as Near's guardian. He is the only member of the SPK whom Near is certain has never been seen by Kira.
A one-shot story set after the main series reveals that Lester continues to work alongside Near, the new L, and Halle Lidner.
