Akio is Anthy's older brother and the acting chairman of the academy. Despite his minimal presence in the first season, he becomes crucial in the second and third seasons. His name originates from the Japanese term for Venus, the Morning Star, associated with Lucifer.
In his younger days, Akio and Dios (the Spanish word for "God") were seemingly one entity. However, he became corrupted and lost his identity as a "prince." Akio can be likened to a fallen angel given his name and role in the story. In the manga, Anthy intentionally separates the two; in the anime, his fall is more ambiguous—appearing influenced by Anthy but also by his loss of faith in the world that torments him and his sister. To regain his lost power, he establishes the Dueling Game, aiming to find a Duelist whose sword is noble and strong enough to break the Rose Gate sealing his power.
In the movie, "Dios" is merely an illusion created by Anthy to mask her brother's flaws, allowing her to have a hero to believe in. In the anime, Akio manipulates Utena’s familiarity with his "better half," becoming her lover. He desires to see her as his princess and relieve her of the burden of becoming a prince. Ultimately, though, he uses her like all other duelists, yet she rebels against his vision of turning her into a submissive princess.
Akio appears to dominate Anthy both personally and sexually; their incestuous and power-driven relationship shapes Anthy’s behavior in both the anime and the movie. However, Akio isn’t entirely dominant as he relies on Anthy for various reasons. In the anime, Akio seems to genuinely love Anthy and feels her pain, but his selfishness drives him to continue his role in the duels. He mourns his lost role as the Prince, but—as Anthy notes—he chose his path.
Akio is also a notable playboy with numerous conquests, including Kanae, Utena, Kozue, Tokiko, Touga, and even Kanae's mother. There are also insinuations involving Saionji and Wakaba. His trademark symbol is his flashy automobile, used to invite friends, duelists, and potential sexual partners for midnight rides. Creator Ikuhara has stated that Akio’s appearance, presentation, and car represent the adult world and adult power.
