Ai Coleman was once a quiet and withdrawn boy from Hole. Raised by his grandfather, who largely neglected him, Ai found himself bored and depressed due to the lack of stimulation in his life. He spent much of his time reading books, particularly one about sorcerers written by Dr. Kasukabe. Despite hating the place he lived in and disliking how sorcerers experimented on humans there, Ai was fascinated by them. Determined, he decided to find a way to become a magic user. Even though Dr. Kasukabe tried to discourage him, arguing that it was impossible for a human to become a sorcerer, Ai's intelligence led him to devise a method. He underwent dangerous surgeries and conducted experiments on himself to incorporate powers from sorcerers. Through these means, Ai accumulated immense power, leaving destruction in his path. He surpassed the strongest sorcerers and aimed even higher—to become like the Devils who ruled over the sorcerers, and possibly surpass them as well. For most of the story, Ai resided in a dimensional distortion inside "Kaiman," a microcosm of Hole. He appeared as a boy missing the top half of his body, speaking with gurgling "splosh" noises emanating from his exposed entrails. Ai rarely ventured outside this distortion because his outer body had become a zombie after dying and being revived on Living Dead Day. Instead, he exerted his influence from within by managing the multiple heads and spare body parts of his other personalities.
