Great chapter, I always love the background story's, I think I feel sorry for baba, Matahachi turned out like this.

So Matahachi really is a son of a mistress. It was really kind of Osugi to raise him as her own child.

So the old hag isn't Matahachi's biological mother. Makes sense considering the age gap between the two.

Matahachi's a completely different man now it seems.

Great chatper!

Interesting backstory! But I didn't get who Matahachi's real father was? Was his father the Master Hon'iden who died and he had a affair with that young women and got her pregnant and thats why Otsugi went to her and wanted that child to contiune the heritage? Because the way it was structured thats what it would imply!

Matahachi trying to confess his lies to his dying mother!!!

Will they make it to the village or will the mother die before being back?!?!

Damn thats some great drama writing by Inoue!

又 mata, again

又一 mataichi once again (his original name)

又八 matahachi The horizon that once again opens

Matahachi is adopted! And we finally get to see the reason behind his mother’s obsession for him. His father died before Matahachi could even remember his face and the man that once he almost could call a father (Gon-oji) is now a ghost from his sins that he’ll never forget.

Takehiko is a freaking genius. His surrealistic and symbolic way when developing the plot never ceases to amaze me.  The use of kanjis in their semantic and pictographic meanings, ghosts from the past, allegories… While Musashi finds himself in the spiral of killing, Matahachi is in the circle of lies. 嘘。。。嘘。。。

It may appear that Matahachi is just a useless character but in fact he adds a lot of humanity to the plot. Musashi is the ingenious part and the traditional protagonist – the one that achieves his objectives. Matahachi represents most of the people that have to give up on their dreams (when realizing they’re not good enough).  It may appear that Matahachi is just a useless character but I’m pretty sure he will be a decisive factor in this story’s ending.

Even if things are bad now… once again the horizon will open… definitely

Matahachi's finally facing that he's weak. He was running away from it constantly, trying to avoid facing the truth with pleasures like money, prostitutes and alcohol. Now that he's confronted it, he can make real progress. Great chapter imo.

So the old hag isn't really Matahachi's mother? The young woman who was holding him is?

Yes Matahachi, you're telling us things we already know. You're weak, now stop pitying yourself.
