"Girl talking about sperm" That is a really funny way to look at it, Shinji

"Test Tube Baby"

Jeez, they sure left that out of the anime. That's definitely.....interesting.

So, they started living together. I honestly like pretty much everything here. Having them actually practice dancing together makes sense compared to how it was done in the anime. Them running into Gendo was interesting, as it caused the two of them to have a much needed talk. 4 volumes in and it's still so strange to see these character open up to eacher, even if just a little bit. Lack of communication was one of the main themes of the anime, so it will be interesting what kind of effects this openess has in the future.

Asuka, in a pretty large departure from the anime, describes herself as a test tube baby. Her father, who we only see in silhouette, was a "genius doctor" who only served as a sperm donor. Her father and mother apparently being (in Asuka's words) "elite" really drives home her air of superiority and haughtiness, as well as her astounding abilities in and outside of the Eva. She is pretty much perfect, it seems.

Yet, her sleep talk about her mother alludes to the possibility that she too has her issues.

I like how the manga goes deep into the characterization for the main cast earlier in the story, the development feels more payed off later. And finally, Shinji gets his mp3 player back

Perhaps my favorite chapter thus far. Asuka &  Shinji's chemistry is infinitely entertaining, the exchange leading up to her shower and after it was pretty funny, love there dynamic. The test tube change is interesting, really works well with how much the manga has emphasized her raw ability, and assuming the manga remains on course with the rest of the series, I can see this being a change for the better (time will tell). I loved the brief scene with Gendo too, particularly how after his cold rejected it was shaded with in a dark gradient while Shinji & Asuka were drawn regularly. A simple, effective way to illustrate Gendo's cold nature and their distant relationship. Considering one of the anime's greatest strength was its visual direction, I'm pleased that it's the same with the manga.  Only this time using the particularly advantages of manga.

The relationships in this manga are slowly building bit by bit.

I like the way the characters open up at times, even if for a little bit. I wonder what Shinji thinks about Asuka's logic about 'getting recognition through piloting the Eva'. For Rei and Shinji as well, piloting the Eva has more meaning than just saving the world. It gives them a meaning to their supposedly empty lives.

The manga is doing a much better job in portraying Asuka than the anime.  I prefer Asuka being a test tube baby, though it is a significant change from the anime.
