Oh man, the feelz... This is really great so far, oh man. The additional scenes that weren't present in the anime are just sublime... The scenes and dialogue present here as well as the insight to the character's internal thoughts is just incredible and complements the already phenomenal story so well!

This manga doesn't actually feel that old now... Yeah, I like Misato better, and I can understand Shinji better now too.

I was never the biggest fan of Misato, but I really like her in this manga.  This first volume was well done and I have high hopes for the next ones.

This was the chapter which really made me fall in love with this manga. The way it ended was beautiful to say the least. Misato and Shinji's relationship is one of my fav parts in Eva, and the manga manages to do it really well in vol 01.

That part where Gendo just turns away in contempt was pretty hard to take for me, never mind Shinji. The guy just risked his own life and his own father can't even express a word of gratitude or show the least bit of concern for him.

I think the final panels are pretty much what Evangelion is in a nutshell: beautiful, but nevertheless with a hint of sadness.

Actually beautiful to see Shinji to have some balls and openly express his frustration without having to pop the bubble

And the first volume ends. Pretty good so far. There are differences from the anime, but they aren't bad.

As for this chapter, interesting dream at the start. The artwork continues to look great, especially at the end with all the buildings.

I liked how Shinji saw Gendo with Rei, it's got to hurt to see your father turn away from you like that. That never exactly happened with me, but I also can't say I'm particularly close with my dad either.

The scene with Misaton and Shinji as they watched Tokyo-3 rise up was great. These two character's relationship has always been one of my favorite parts of the anime, this scene seems to indicate that that will also be so in the manga. He is grateful, I'm sure, for her words. But, it hurts that it wasn't his father who he heard it from. Validation and support from your parents is something every person; Man, Woman, Boy, Girl, Transgender, whatever wants on at least some level, I think.

Also, the look Rei gives Shinji in the hospital has always unnerved me for some reason.

Really good first volume. It handled the excellent first two episodes really well, I think.

When comparing the two versions, the anime and the manga, I still don't think there's an instance where I preferred the manga version but in this case at least, I still really enjoyed the story told. I like how it emphasizes the effects the event had on Shinji through his dreams, how it places importance on the quick dialogue-less interaction between Shinji & Misato, and how that all culminates in a beautiful final page where Shinji expresses his desire for approval from his father. It's a very well-constructed chapter, and my favorite of the first volume.
