well this was def a more satisfying conclusion than 20th century boys. even if we don't really get any info on the other friend, i'm assuming he's just some random boy in the school with no friends who wants to be like fukube.
also i definitely think kenji ends up with yukiji. does urasawa really need to spell it out explicitly? come on.

You're definitely right I feel the proposal quote in chapter 3 cemented that as long as Kenji stopped the anti-proton bomb and came out of the VR alive.
Honestly even though we didn't get to see the face of the other Friend, this ended off a series I've followed for a year. The journey. The action. The suspense. I love it all. Sadakiyo and Katsumata both wore masks, but Sadakiyo was the only one to push past that mask. The only one to get a group behind him that have hearts and love. Katsumata instead fell down the dark abyss and into the path of Friend.
Such a satisfying read. It's not as deep as Monster or quite as refined but it's still a hell of a story and one of my favorite manga. Re-reading the whole story again has been a really trip I have to say. It's really awesome how Urasawa takes all the sci-fi and manga hero tropes then twists them into a more realistic form. It makes for a really unpredictable read.
Anyway, 20th Century Boys is an easy 9 out of 10 for me and 21st Century Boys is an 8 out of 10 because it still doesn't quite answer all the questions that are left over. Although in a story so big and spanning so much time it would be almost impossible for the there to be no left over questions.
Well the only thing left to say is Gutlala Sudalala!
I have read this manga this year 2014. Great Art and story indeed; especially the romance of Yukiji and Kenji; their love story is more romantic than Shoujo manga LOL.
The mother and daughter reunion was so lacklustre. This is one of my biggest gripes. I wish they embraced or did something more heartfelt. Kiriko is quite frankly a bad mother, I understand her not being present for most of the story as she was constructing the vaccine, but to leave after 'Friend' was seemly defeated without meeting her own daughter and brother, that's just horrible.
