Seafarers used the sextant to pinpoint their longitude and latitude while at sea...Shigure needs to know these so she can find out where she is, and where the nearest landmass is, so when she escapes for real she can head there.

This reminds me of a scene in Hajime no Ippo, in which they're still somewhere in the nineties and suddenly, some character pulls out a smartphone.

Facebook and Twitter? both social networks didn't exist in the time this manga is situated in. It's a minor detail, but it really killed the joke for me. The manga started in 2002 and so far not even two years should have passed 'in-manga'. Facebook was founded in 2004 and Twitter another two years later.
This reminds me of a scene in Hajime no Ippo, in which they're still somewhere in the nineties and suddenly, some character pulls out a smartphone.
Yeah, it's just a floating timeline, lotsa long running things do it. Ever see The Simpsons, or Detective Conan?
