I have always been a huge fan of unlimited flow type of danmei, so I thought this one would hit right up my alley since the other reviewers have also given it really great reviews. However, for some reason, I just feel like that something from this series is lacking though I myself don't know what it is. I have read 137 chapters so far but there's only one arc that managed to stir some emotions in me which was the First High School arc.

MC is an interesting character. He is very apathetic but he manages to hide it well under acting, since as a magician, acting is an important part of the performance. This isn't a spoiler, both he and ML have been described to be very similar in temperaments and thinking-style, it's just that MC took a completely different route from ML which intrigues ML to no end.

Now I always love me some good old "Enemies-to-Lovers" trope. Qiang Jin Jiu is one of my fave novels of all times and Welcome to Nightmare Live also has this trope. But for some reason, this CP just doesn't hit it for me, and I don't even know why. Instead I somehow shipped MC with Zhuge An which also got me a bit confused but the vibe is there. None of these people are good people btw so it's not like I'm shipping him with Zhuge An because he's like a decent person or something, it's just the vibe I got. I guess this is also one of the reasons why I'll be putting this novel on hold.

Before the First High School Arc, there are 4 other arcs which have been completely translated. The translation is amazing but the stories themselves are very forgettable. There's really nothing memorable about the previous four arc, except maybe the Famine Village arc and how gory one of the NPC died, but that's basically it. In the First High School Arc the author finally managed to make me cry and moved, the emotional ups-and-downs were great, it was basically a psychological warfare between trainees without many props involved but somehow managed to be more interesting than the other four arcs.

This arc is also the reason why I'm giving it a 4 Star instead of a 3, it's just a really good arc (emotionally) for me.

After this arc is the Amusement Park arc. I was also expecting something interesting from this arc, but for some reason it just fell flat to me and I lost interest in the novel soon after.

It's not even me having a problem with the ML - I have liked a danmei with worse ML before, WTNL is definitely one since ML literally wants to eat MC - but there's just nothing there. At least up to the point I stopped reading it, I just feel like there's nothing that could get me to be invested enough with the main CP. I do not have a problem with assh*le ML or even assh*le MC, I genunely love well-written-flawed characters with questionable morals, it's just that in my experience as I was reading this, I feel like MC has more chemistry with Zhuge An or even with the Spoiler

original Zhong Jiu's fiance, Van Zhuo.

[collapse]

My friend is going to finish this novel so I'll just wait for her opinion later, whether she likes the CP or not at the end, since we usually have similar ships and taste. Granted, I've only read half of the novel so maybe they will have more chemistry later on?

Love this book! The updates are REAL slow; might shelve it till it’s done.

Love it! Your characters cover the whole spectrum. It's cool to read Alejandro's no nonsense view as a comedic relief.
