This story is not just somewhat HE, but definitely an HE. If we look at the MC's point of view, he got his wish; killing his scum of a husband and destroying the mistress' reputation. Therefore in the eyes of the protagonist; it's a happy end.
Regarding the romance...
The ML is none other than Editor B. Don't let the epilogue confuse you. Read the last chapters carefully. It was quite subtle and muddled and I get the feeling that the author wants to keep it a mystery until the very end so we can have this surprising twist but ended up confusing the hell out of us. In my opinion, the smut in the end between the ML and MC seems to be randomly thrown there to save what little romance they have in the novel as well as what kind of relationship 'trope' they have.
Some reviews have other variations of who the ML and I'm always up for discussion on why I believe the ML is Editor B.
I also saw another review that has a better explanation regarding about B as the ML. But here's my summarized (and lazy) take on it:
During the investigation, Editor B is the one of the two people who figure out that everything has been planned by MC. The other one is the mistress' childhood-friend-turned-policeman (but in the later's case is that he's all intuition without evidence to back up). Editor B has always been attentive to MC and was subtly implied by the author to be pining for MC for a long time.
The 'amnesia' was a test given by MC to ML to see how far his love and devotion towards him goes. It was also a trap to lure the childhood friend/policeman of his husband's mistress. The ML is described to have an ordinary job.
For a film emperor to have an amnesia for 3 years would arose speculation and for someone famous, every movement is being watched wherever you go so it's going to be tricky for the both of them, but it seems that the ML is rather ordinary. Oh and the policeman in the few last chapters recognize him when he's trying to rescue the mistress because he's the one who backs up MC when being interrogated by him; he was the alibi to MC's whereabouts during the time of the crime. And regarding the dead cheating husband's brother...
Lu Hai (the brother) didn't recognized the ML with MC when visiting the mistress. And that's a clue because IF ML is the film emperor he should've recognized him simply because: (1) He's the film emperor. He's big on the news and (2) The film emperor is his brother's mistress's ex.
But he didn't. The ML is described as a stranger. Which only leaves the forever loyal dog Editor B.
So yeah, that's my take on it.
