This novel is quite the anomaly. One one hand it has an excellent plot and character development. One the other hand, I don’t enjoy it nearly as much as novels with similar quality. When I read the first few chapters, I was pleasantly surprised, instead of a typical regression harem story, it seemed I’d get a Re-Zero like experience, where the protagonist, despite seeming rather pathetic at times, succeeds in overcoming his flaws and inner demons and, with a mixture of wit and courage, successfully protects the ones he loves. Instead, I got that minus ‘wit’, ’flaws’ and ‘inner demons’.The protagonist, despite having gone through experiences that would’ve traumatized most, remains awfully naive and unchanged. He’s still the kind of guy who’d rather see the world perish than to kill a singular toddler. The closest thing he has to an ‘inner demon’ is his desire to give up, which, while reasonable, isn’t really a threat considering should he give up, he’d die anyways. He’s also rather s*upid. I wouldn’t say he’s irredeemably, unforgivably ret*rded but it seems his first regression just didn’t affect him at all, be it in terms of smarts or character.Whens he’s not showing his inadequacy, he’s just unconscious in the ICU as the heroine of the respective arc cries of guilt and pity. The story is currently a cycle ofProtects Heroine>Enters ICU>Wakes up briefly>Heroine learns of the truth>Falls unconscious again>Heroine cries of guilt and pity>MC Wakes up>Heroine doesn’t say Jack shit>MC gets taken by surprise by some other threat. Rinse and repeat
