The first seventy chapters or so are good but then the story begins to feel repetitive, slacking, there is this distinctive feeling of serious lack of tension or plot. So, I get it why some readers love this relaxing, almost stagnant story while others drop it.

This is a story of a woman with a unique gift, she is a social genius with an extremely high EQ and a marketing genius (which was her specialization as a university grad in our times) who, strangely enough, is completely uninterested in social involvement (professionally speaking). She only desires to be a wife and a mom, an occupation which, with many kids, each one being unusually demanding due to their unique giftedness, and a not so simple husband, is already a 24/7 job.

So, the story focuses mostly on the domestic bliss, on her superb cooking skills (she was a wealthy food blogger before transmigrating) and her superb social skills as she loves her husband and their kids and protects them to let them grow safely enough.

The unusual feature of this 1970's novel is

that the FL's (the original girl's) farming family is not dirt poor nor evil. What a surprise! She is the daughter of a captain of the production team in their village and her amazing mom is a genius seamstress and tailor. Their daughter was very smart and a good learner, most likely number one in their province, and her parents let her learn, freeing her from the obligation to work in the commune's fields to earn work points. She still had to cook for the family and babysit her two little nephews though.

So, no, she was not spoiled. Learning, studying, especially in China, where there is a lot of rote memorization involved (Chinese characters, idioms, and Chinese poetry have to be memorized, over a hundred thousand of them) is very time-consuming, demanding.

The FL herself is not a gold digger meaning she did not choose the ML to become wealthy or to strip him of his wealth. She only asked him if he would feed her, if there would be meat on their table. In her first life, she happened to date a man who was very stingy with money spent on food, and she was a wealthy foodie and a talented cook, so that was a sore spot for her, such incompatibility of values.

About the ML

Spoiler

Well, he is a sexy guy. A smart and busy surgeon, the head of the surgery department (or of the entire military hospital, I am not sure), and a medical researcher.

What he did to his kids after his wife died was practically unforgivable but to him it seemed like the best choice of all available choices at the time. He left two tiny boys (a newborn and a four years old) with his own evil stepmother, a woman so bad that he himself as a kid in his past escaped her home. And left to war, to work as a battlefield medic where he was so badly injured himself that it took him a year to get back to his kids.

When he returned a year later and saw his emaciated and all over injured kids, with broken bones, he was absolutely floored. How the kids survived this year, it was a miracle.

Thank God, he found himself a matchmaker, the matchmaker found him a couple of candidates and he chose the FL. The FL comes to rescue all of them, the dad and the kids. She teaches and inspires him to be a great dad and a good husband.

I’m only a few chapters in so I’ll leave another review when I’ve caught up, but I can’t contain myself!! This is one of the best books I’ve read - captivating plot, characters that feel like real people, great writing. I can’t turn the pages fast enough!
