This was so awesome… I have desired Joseph on Dio combat ever since I became aware of the possibility. It was short, but the stand off of wits with the hamon imbued Hermit Purple body armor and Dio using rocks as projectiles and later a knife was excellent. “Disagreeable old man.” “You cautious son of a bitch.” When facing the Joestars, the Dio I remember shines in his purest form. And in a sense, I have to wonder if Dio has become bored. He has been training his ability and now he can freeze time for five seconds. But, as a vampire who could freeze time, he must not have had much to fight for. The glee he takes in fighting the descendants of the one man he ever came to respect could be very real. He calls Joseph “Jonathan’s grandson” and he shatters a cat into pieces while knocking people’s bodies around like lifeless toys! I definitely feel like, perhaps not with Polnareff, but with Joseph and Jotaro, he doesn’t want to end this as quickly as possible. What else does he have to live for once he’s done with them?!
I could be overstepping my analysis here, perhaps stepping over the weak is the kind of validation he can be content with forever, but I can’t help but imagine it would feel empty once he reached the uncontested top. With pondering on the purpose of survival, and some potential self reflection I do think there’s reason to hold this kind of thought.
