Sorry but I think Dio’s stand looks like a weird screwdriver.. What would you say if I told you it's inspired by the cover art of a Ronnie James Dio album?

Polnareff came face to face with Dio and Dio continued to try and use fear to control him.  In a calm before the storm that reminded me of N’Doul and Jotaro’s stand off, Dio seemed to use his stand to force Polnareff down the stairs one step at a time, instilling fear and self doubt, and he offered another chance to work under him.  In doing so we had the concept of what it means to survive emerge once more.

In chapter 17, Enya suggested that to survive was to get what you desire(money/fame/love) and to fight for it, and Dio in turn stated that to fight is to conquer one’s fear.  Yet here, Dio stated that to survive was to attain peace of mind as this is the ultimate end all desires seek.  There is definite truth to this, in Dio’s very own past the power and money he was after showcased this.  But his past also rejects this, to be pitied by anyone disgusted him, he rejected a place at a manor full of a rich, powerful family which loved him unconditionally because he needed something more.  I think this is where his logic crumbles in a frail attempt to convince and manipulate Polnareff.  Polnareff has things he values more than his own life, just as Dio does, for Polnareff to face his death for his friends could probably achieve his peace of mind.  Recall that even when controlled by a flesh bud, he rejected Dio.  To go further in how I don’t think Dio believes his words, Kakyoin parallels Dio’s desire to conquer fear and prove himself, he has come back after already kneeling to fear once.  To me, it feels like Dio has been asking this very question on the topic of survival to himself through the journey, possibly questioning his purpose.

I actually had two varying emotional moments here, opposite feelings whiplashed together.  The first was being proud of Polnareff’s strength and bravado to taunt Dio and not show his pain.  But then quickly I feared and uttered, “you better have a good damn plan Polnareff”, because we collectively know that he will not win this fight.  Beyond his injuries, he is not a Joestar.  Later, when the boys broke through the wall in the nick of time checking box #2 for Polnareff once again, I was happy, but it was bittersweet because this only happened once.  This turn of events wasn’t there for Abdul and Iggy.

Based on this chapter and the title, they are in Dio's world and he is somehow able to use his Stand to manipulate it.

Polnareff didn't only have the displeasure of meeting DIO first, because he also got to experience the inexplicable power of THE WORLD first hand as well. It's very lucky that others had arrived just in time to prevent him from doing more harm to Polnareff.
