I was wondering if the Empress could read Joseph’s thoughts because that would be his worst enemy but I’d still expect him to outsmart it somehow. That said, it doesn’t appear it’s going that route. Instead it’s just prepared. Knowing Joseph’s stand isn’t an overtly offensive stand and that by joining his body ripple won’t work for whatever reason, he’s a good target. Killing the doctor and framing him for murder, either the police or the Empress will kill him and as he runs, it can eat and grow at a rapid pace. Going so far to materialize as a half flesh baby man with arms and gold…?! That punch to the face Joseph got was prime out of context Jojo’s material. Also, Joseph talking a big game to the flesh monster and showing us how he had no plan whatsoever was a beautiful Joseph moment. Overall, I was honestly glad Joseph missed Polnareff, he would certainly bring funny antics into the mess but I want Joseph to have some spotlight. He saved the darn world and fought demigods and even what one can very much call a god in Cars. He’s clever and I believe in him to solve this; plus that would continue the pattern of not making anyone look bad to make the others look better!
Speaking of Polnareff, he certainly is not taking the path of big brother. It was slightly sad to me because I would have adored that and it seems like a perfect position to pull it off, but like I initially suggested, hypocritical, romantic horndog Polnareff is not something to scoff at either.
Overall this is charming. It’s a unique threat and Joseph must learn how to fight against it. Perhaps by identifying how to use Hermit Purple as more of a weapon; something he started to do in this chapter. Or perhaps by using that head of his to acknowledge that the stand attached after he bandaged up Nena and the only constant since then has been her. Therefore it’s likely her which is creating the stand and staying close to keep it strong and therefore by hurting her it will hurt the stand. Either way, I believe in him as he fights against comical body horror. And I just love the recurrent gags from Battle Tendency. Crashing a plane, sentient flesh attached to him, or even just making enemies of cops. History repeats itself.
