This was a strong chapter, a great introduction to new and old characters and new powers. I was definitely gripped. Firstly, I wanted to remark on the fact that this part is bringing together all three parts quite literally.
The major antagonist of Phantom Blood is supposedly back in that vignette which showed the sun rising, therefore not telling if Dio can live in the sun, but rather showing us the mysterious way he made the crew disappear.
We have Joseph here, the hero of Battle Tendency, and he’s as wonderful as always. Brashly shoving people aside, showing the love for his family which has always been a defining part of him, calling his daughter a 45 year old woman and telling her to let go. That tickling panel was phenomenal. It also made sure to remind us of Joseph’s mechanical hand, something that connects these parts yet again and a gift from the late, great Stroheim, something I’ve been eager to see. Joseph with a launchable hand and immense pinching power sounds beautiful, although I’m unsure if it will live up to the greatest of Stroheim's arsenal.
Then of course, a standoff with the new Joestar generation, Jotaro and the old, Joseph. With Jotaro being the epitome of standoffish, Joseph called forward Avdol, his Egyptian friend who shares an evil spirit. A flaming bird which pinned Jotaro’s body down forcing his spirit to come out. Quite genius.
As for some small things to note, we’ve had it run home that only some people can see these spirits and what they do. If I had to guess, it’s the motif of hamon continuing. That of Joseph retaining the hamon that Jonathan harnessed. The hamon stays in the bloodline and it seems it may have taken a new evolutionary direction or something. At the very least, I think those with hamon capabilities can witness the spirits in action. That, and I loved Joseph picking up a cop and telling him to move out of the way, he’s always been on the ACAB team, having destroyed a pair in his introduction.
