There are a lot of harsh reviews I think are really unfair; however, it's not like I can't see their point. You see, the first part of the first vol. Has a different momentum compared to the rest of the story: Hajime is in a unreasonable position, struggling to do his best, and was ultimately betrayed; he then falls from grace, and went through hell to climb back, changing permanently. That said, if nothing else had happened, he'd had abandoned his humanity; but the people he met and ended up caring for or already cared about, specially Yue, kept him from this, intentionally or unintentionally. It was also no-one's design, a number of (seemly) random events had to align for that to happen.Spoiler
In the end, a huge part of his story arc is about retaining his humanity, even when he never becomes a hero.
[collapse]So if you don't like the fact that he didn't become a full-time revenge-hungry edgelord incapable of forgiving nor having human interactions, or that he has a (unwanted) harem (read: family, friends & things allowing him to think straight), some with quirky personalities, this story is not for you.
