Description: The two opposing families, with generations of feud, received an order from the king: “The two families must become in-laws to bury the hatchet and start anew.”
Ju family’s youngest daughter, Ju Ha-young: “Do you think I want to get married to you? I don’t like you either.”
Yeon family’s second son, Yeon Mu-eun: “Would you prefer to die rather than be the daughter-in-law of the Yeon family?”
They held presumptions about each other based on the rumours they heard, giving rise to misunderstandings between them. In time, their feelings slowly changed for each other.
‘It’s strange.’
Can there be no smoke without fire? Ha-young could not understand the bad rumors surrounding her good-natured husband.
‘You’re mine.’
Mu-eun felt an overwhelming joy as he looked at his wife’s dear smile. He desired that smile.
I finished reading the book! A bit disappointing because the whole background of the two fighting families is basically ignored. Like, there is no plot importance of the two families who hate each other. Instead, there’s familial drama from Mueun’s side. It also is NOT an enemies to lovers trope as the two main characters basically fall for each other after having sex once. This book is definitely a light novel as it was only around ~150 pages. Although the novel was written by the author of The Great Wish and Lucia, it isn’t as good tbh. There’s barely any plot and the characters are not that interesting. Summary below for those curious. The main conflict is that Mueun’s mom treats her first son (Muin) very well, at the expense of Mueun. All the bad rumors that Hayoung heard about Muen are actually about Muin (gambling, drinking, getting into fights). The mother purposely hides all of Muin bad deeds and the ones she can’t hide, are attributed to Muen. Hayoung notices that her mother-in-law treats the 2 brothers very differently. Her father-in-law just seems oblivious. A couple months pass, and Hayoung has gotten used to married life. She’s a little confused because Mueun is very different from the rumors. He doesn’t get into fights, drink, or gamble. While waiting for Muen to come home, she runs into Muin. He tells her that it would have been nice if they were married to each other. Hayoung refutes this and says that Muen is the one meant for her. Although their marriage was arranged, they would have met even without the arrangement. Hayoung runs away from Muin and finds Muen. He looks are her intently and they have a steamy snu snu session. He had heard what she said to Muin and he’s so happy that he has something that is his. Everything that he had in the past, he was forced to give to his brother. He refuses to do that anymore. Basking in after-sex glow, Hayoung asks Muen about his scar that is on his face. He tells her that he got it because he didn’t have enough skill when practicing sword fighting. When she asks about his sight, she realizes that he can see fine and doesn’t have bad eyesight. Muen laughs at her. He tells her that he thought she had a link for having sex with full lights on because she always had a lot of lights on. Hayoung finds out the truth when a tiger shows up in the village. Everyone talks about how Muin courageously took care of the tiger. Later, when Mueun comes home, she realizes that he has been injured and has claw marks on his body. She realizes the truth that Muen acts as a shadow for Muin and does all the dirty work and takes the fall for any bad rumors. When Mueun and Hayoung first got married, Mueun’s mother told him that since Muin doesn’t have any kids yet, Mueun can’t have kids first. The mother then sends Muin “supplements” that are basically birth control. When Hayoung sees this suspicious supplement, she takes it to a known doctor who tells her that the “supplements” can work as a short time for birth control but that it is also poisonous if taken for a long time. At the same time, Mueun is meeting with the crown prince. The crown price knows that the rumors of Mueun are actually attributable to Muin. At the meeting, Mueun asks if he can be stationed in a city far away when he passes his civic test. Mueun thinks to himself that in the past, his mom and brother were his family. Now he considers Hayoung to be his family. So he has to leave the city to protect Hayoung. When Muen comes home, he finds Hayoung crying because she’s sad her husband is being mistreated. He apologizes for making her sad because of the false rumors. He tells her that he’s been secretly throwing away the supplements instead of swallowing them. He then asks her if she’s okay with leaving the city. The book then explains what went down with Mueun’s scar. Both brothers were born with physical strength and were excellent in sword fighting. However, Mueun was always a little better than Muin but Mueun hide his skills. Muin always felt a little inferior to Mueun and felt that Mueun was hiding his skills so Muin challenged Mueun to a sword duel. Mueun accepted. During the match Muin made a lot of mistakes so Mueun tried to cover up for Muin’s mistakes. Because of this, Muin injured Muen’s eye. There was a lot of blood. Afterwards, Muin started to drink and gamble a lot. Of course, Mueun aces his civic test. He and Hayoung move to a southern city that is far away from their current home. They end up having 3 boys within 5 years. Muen and Hayoung gets word that Muin has passed away. Mueun travels back home to figure out what happened. It turns out that after Muen left, Muin’s bad habits got worse. Because Muen, the scapegoat, was no longer available, the father found out what the state of Muin was like. The father placed Muin on house arrest but the relationship between them soured. Muin then left home after a fight with his father. Muin drank a lot and then insisted on riding a horse. While riding the horse, he fell and broke his neck, and died. The family asks Mueun to come back and become the successor. He refuses because he is happy living in a remote with with Hayoung. Mueun then tells his father about the fact that his mother gave him poison as birth control. The father then realizes what has been going on and leaves his mother. Mueun comes back home. He tells Hayoung that they can go back when the time comes, but for now, he wants to enjoy their time together. They start talking about their misconceptions and Mueun reveals that he fell in love with her at first sight. When the royal decree was first commanded, Mueun heard rumors that Hayoung was suicidal because doctors were going in and out of the Joo family residence. He was really desperate for his motherMs affection and was also very sad when he heard that his future wife didn’t like him so much that she was willing to attempt suicide. He then packed his bags with the intention of leaving everything so that he could just wander from here to there. Before leaving, he thought that he would regret it if he never saw his future bride’s face, so he secretly went to the Joo family residence and looked for her. He saw her weak body but that she was smiling brightly at a bouquet of flowers. He thought to himself how happy he would be, if she smiled at him like that. When he went back home, he unpacked his bags because the boy was already smitten End
Adagio means slowly played or slow so Imma expect this novel to have a very slow-paced development in terms of plot but still engaging enough so it won't be too boring
「I'm saying this to your old heart, Mueun. Doesn't your brother still have no children? I believe you will behave wisely.」
It was his mother's request to her son who went to greet her first text after marriage. Don't give birth before your brother. Keep the familial order.
He had always heard similar words when he was growing. Your brother is the eldest son, the person who will succeed this family, the eldest son must be well in order for the family to be in peace, and the younger brother must not exceed the older brother.
If he showed anything superior to his older brother, he was scolded, not praised. The mother raised her eyes violently and criticized him.
「You're trying to make a flower rot in my house!" Did you eat the evil spirit of having a quarrel?」
When he was young, he thought what his mother said was right, but when he realized that it was unreasonable, he gave up. He was desperate for the gentle expression and kind words his mother showed to him when he showed his mother that he was inferior to his older brother.
He thought that he didn't have any more expectations, but he felt more heartbroken today. He thought that he was not even his mother's less painful finger, but a finger without pain at all. (TN: This is a Korean metaphor. The favorite child is the most painful finger so it gets the most attention. Here, Mueun feels like he isn’t even his mother’s child because he isn’t even a less painful finger).
"Husband."
He erased his disturbing expression and looked back. His heart throbbed when he saw his wife smiling while looking at him.
"Why didn’t you go in first?"
"I'm was afraid you might get lost.”
Mueun said as he shyly grinned at Ha-young.
"I heard you were called to sister-in-law’s place. Did anything happen?”
"Nothing happened. I just said let's all get along well."
Ha-young passed by him and looked back wondering because there was no sign of walking together. Mueun, who was staring at her, said.
"My wife, let’s go and greet my father-in-law."
"Okay."
"Now."
"What? Now?"
"Do you need time to get ready?"
"No, there's nothing to prepare. But breakfast will be served soon."
"You can go and eat. Will father-in-law give you breakfast?"
Ha Young said with a smile.
"The table will be set up with so much food that the table legs will break. Then we can say hello to father and mother...….”
"Let's just leave. We can do that. There's been so much I've been doing on my own accord."
Ha-young saw a bitter smile passing by his face at the moment.
