Well this is a mash-up with my opinion about what I remember of this novel, since I am currently caught up into a different one (sorry if there are any inaccuracies). Mind you that this will spoil a lot of the novel, especially the final archs.
Well, that's what surprised me of this novel, the fact that the characters are drawn in a more realistic way, despite it does contain several usual tropes and there's a particular villain that's quite stereotyped (ex husband's new wife).
The female lead is a normal human, she isn't OP, she isn't stupid either, but her life choices brought her to the current stuck situation. Her career is mediocre and she has stagnated because she followed everything her ex husband told her to do. Yes, the trope of the rich boyfriend saving her from this ordeal is played, but it is painted in a more believeable way than in other novels. She does eventually get offered a new job at his company, and she switches paths using the things she learnt in college.
The ex husband's new wife is the woman he cheated her with. She is a spoiled rich brat who got widowed and then went to seduce someone else's husband, but the husband is portrayed as responsible for this affair as the woman is. The husband is a scumbag but he is a believeable character too. He is that sort of man who gets bored of his married life and wife and, when someone throws a hint to him, he decides to take it and cheat. He eventually tells the wife he wants to divorce to remarry, because the new woman is richer and she is from a relatively influential family, otherwise you can bet the man would had kept cheating on her without divorcing.
The mistress turned wife is annoying. She is self-centered, she is overly toxic to the man, and he is starting to get tired of her as well as not accepting the possibility the wife he abandoned may redo her own life with someone else. Ironically, he pays more attention to the female lead now they're divorced, he seems sorry for her bad economic situation, trying to give her gifts and buy her stuff he never bought while they were married, just out of regret and pity. That irritates the new wife, who also mistreats the son he had with the female lead.
About the son, this vixen gets to the extent of bribing a police officer who is her cousin to avoid the child to be rescued when he goes missing after he's been blamed of breaking one of her porcelains. The woman is pure evil, she doesn't design the situation where the child allegedly brakes her things, but she quickly blames him and wants the female lead to pay for it (an expensive object she can't afford), and tries to capitalize on this incident to make the husband cast his own son aside. The child is obviously hurt when his own father doesn't even let him explain, so he ends up leaving on her own, then he gets lost and abducted by a mentally disabled homeless man, who takes care of him, but when everybody is looking for the child, his father's new wife gets hold of his whereabouts first and tries to arrange for the child to be trafficked away.
This woman ends up dying out of her own selfish stupidity. Female Lead discovers that her nanny/housekeeper is in fact a woman whose husband got killed by her on a hit-and-run. This woman seeks revenge, so she already tried killing her before, but ended up killing her late husband. The woman tries to use Female Lead's child to seek discord between the child's father and his wife (the vixen), but it backfires when the child goes missing (the woman is repentant that she hurt others in the process), when the child's back safely, FL asks him about what happened, and she starts doubting this woman, so she investigates her and finds out her purpose. After thinking thoroughtly, she decides to tell the vixen, but the vixen is so stupid that goes to confront this woman who ends up killing her on the spot.
I admit that was quite an unexpected plot-twist. I didn't expect the main villain to die like this, in the middle of the story. Sadly, the author ends up forgetting the ex husband who was already regretting leaving FL and delusionally thinks he can get her back now his toxic wife is dead.
The other stuff I remember, is all about the last archs. the Male Lead happens to have several schizophrenia cases (very badly portrayed, btw) in his family, he is supposed to be free of the anomaly that causes most of his relatives to die from this (they all end up comitting suicide), but because there's a second spoiled brat (less vixen) that is obsessed with him, she gets schemed against to make him believe he also has it. That alienates him from the FL and causes a lot of innecessary angst (communication!) and is what plays almost up till the end, when their relationship was going to become stable (heading to marriage). It is what makes this novel deflate a lot, because the archs become unnecessary long and also because Chinese authors tend to be really shallow when writing about mental illnesses as well as when talking about stuff LGTB-related.
In the end, everything is discovered and FL forgives him and all. Sorry I don't remember much about the full ending.
In chapter 30+… MC have a blind date with her childhood friend, because her parents push her to it… the night before it ML and MC's best friend ( lets call her BF from now on) was with MC in her apartment, Tongtong (MC's son) asked ML to tell him stories, while MC and BF was in the kitchen washing dishes and talking about MC having a blind date tomorrow night with her childhood friend that is also divorcee and have a daughter who is younger to Tongtong… coincidentally ML is going to ask MC to get the story books and heard about they talk… so he decided to follow MC Edit: This is just a MTL so … If I understand it correctly the reason of husband cheating is not only because he's a horny *ss*ole but also because his a power greedy b******… the woman he cheated with is the Mayor's daughter …
I'm still reading this so … and I skip some chapters in the beginning cause her workmates and the b**** are annoying… and also I want to immediately read their interaction …
But I can't stop myself from posting this cause its so funny … so the a***ole (Ex) and the b**** (YX) fights… YX want them to reconcile, she plan to surprise him by cooking and wearing sexy clothes (its maid outfit I think)… while MC asked the Ex to take care of Tongtong for a while cause she needs to go back to her hometown cause her grandfather died… this is from chapter 40 if remember correct …
The password lock made a lot of sounds, and Lu Zhenyu returned.
Ye Xiuqing unbuttoned two small buttons on her chest to reveal more scenery, twisted her waist and walked to the door to wait.
