Title: Saying goodbye to the fiancé I should have loved, my talent blossomed
Literal translation title: Saying goodbye to my fiancé, who I should have loved, the hidden talent blossomed.
Japanese: 大好きだったはずの婚約者に別れを告げたら、隠れていた才能が花開きました
Syosetsu: https://ncode.syosetu.com/n3231hr/

I'm not sure if my title is accurate or not - if not, please let me know! I more or less took the literal translation.

The synopsis is this:

Sylvia is engaged to her childhood friend Randall from an early age. She has a nondescript appearance and her magic is weak, contrasting greatly against his good looks and strong magical talent. Their academic standings are also unequal, as he is a strong student whereas she is barely passing. This has lead to Sylvia developing an inferiority complex. Yet Randall has always supported her despite others looking down on her for not being his equal.

One day Sylvia happens to overhear Randall speaking with one of his friends. When they question the engagement and his relationship with another student, Randall is dismissive and refers to the engagement as an unpleasant obligation he couldn't avoid.

Upset, Sylvia offers to break the engagement only to discover that Randall has become obsessed with her. A chance encounter with a rare light magician Albert results in him also showing interest in her.

The author has promised that this will be "A happy ending love story."

FL is practicing defensive spells. (Quick note: the demon subjugation mentioned in the last spoiler seems to be part of a holiday, so it may be ceremonial as well as practical? The machine translation was a bit weird.)  She gives Albert and Yuri gifts to celebrate the spirit birthday (aforementioned holiday, seems to a memorial type holiday where gifts are sometimes given) and Albert invites her to go to the celebrations with him. Yuri has to do prince stuff, so it's going to be just FL and Albert. The chapter ends with someone (Randall) clenching their fist as they watch the cuteness unfold.

On the day of the event FL and Albert meet up, both are kind of spiffied up. It's cute, they hold hands. Randall is watching and seething from afar. He remembers spending the holiday with FL last year. He would frequently get called out to by other women, so he would abandon FL and go flirt with the ladies, making FL wait for him until he returned - and would repeat this every time a lady beckoned him. It's a sharp contrast to this year, where he's alone and FL is with someone who actually treats her well.

Meanwhile FL and Albert are making more sweet memories. They're walking around, talking, eating, and having fun. They stop to look at some jewelry and accessories. Albert buys one for FL, making her extremely happy. They go to the big bonfire and snuggle. Randall is still watching, of course, and glaring at them. FL finally notices him and freezes while she's entering a carriage with Albert, but then goes on with the day.

Next day FL is wearing the hair accessory Albert got her and is lightly teased about it by Yuri, who gives FL his gift. It's a book. Albert starts the class and mentions how they're going to go out and do some monster subjugation type stuff with some people from the fire magic class. FL remembers how Randall glared at her the night before and is creeped out. Yuri picks up on her distress, but FL denies that there is anything wrong.

Meanwhile Randall is still being a creep. He's now planning on using the monster subjugation event to get FL on her own and either talk to or kidnap her. He's still unwilling to admit that things are over and that he screwed everything up. And is super screwed up himself.

(On a side note, it's kind of nice to have a yandere type character who isn't being romanticized or the ML.)

Day of demon subjugating. FL has learned how to put up shields, but is advised to try and keep them from giving off so much light. They come across a monster. Randall defeats it, but since he's with his professor nothing else really happens. Then someone reports seeing a salamander as well as some other monster, implied to be something even worse, so Albert goes off to deal with it. This leaves FL alone, so she strengthens her shield. Randall comes over and breaks her shield easily, then takes her away. Yuri didn't see any of this happen, so he thinks she wandered off into the woods.

Now that he's dragged her off, he rips the hair ornament off of her, saying he'll get her something better. He starts telling her that he wants her back and that he loves her, but that he doesn't want to have to hurt or force her. Just as he's getting ready to step closer to her, a monster appears behind him and stabs him in the stomach. The monster is described as dragon shaped and cloaked in darkness. Realizing that he done screwed up royally and put FL in harm's way, Randall tells FL to run and leave him there. FL doesn't and instead uses her light magic to heal him. Aware that she doesn't know any offensive spells, FL decides to try purifying the monster. It's totally effective. Realizing that this only puts her in more danger, Randall doubles down on telling her to run away. Just as FL is about to pass out, Albert and the others arrive. They manage to save FL. The darkness peels off the monster, revealing a silver dragon, which flies away. The onlookers recall that there's a legend about a similar type of dragon, which is said to be a beneficial spirit.

FL comes to in Albert's arms and he mentions that the dragon was a spirit creature. The whole reason it was covered in miasma (the darkness) is because of all the warped emotions coming from humans. Yuri is off reporting this to the king. FL learns that Randall is in the same hospital and wants to see him.

Randall is lying in bed. He's healed and has been forbidden to ever approach FL again. He was spared expulsion because he didn't actually hurt FL physically and she insisted that he remain in school. FL tells him that she's grateful that he watched out for her earlier in life, but that she wants nothing to do with him anymore and that she's in love with someone else. Realizing that he has truly lost her and now coming to terms with the fact that he can never get her back, Randall is left crying in his room.
This looks like it's starting to wrap up. I have to say, I appreciate that the author is trying to keep this more or less pretty tidy and has given warnings if something is going to be more intense.

More spoilers
Now that the FL has ability to use light magic, her parents are less worried about her being able to care for and protect herself, so they're more open to breaking the engagement. FL goes with Albert and Yuri to a hospital to see Albert use healing magic, which can be used to heal wounds but not restore limbs. While at the hospital FL sees a girl missing a limb and of course, is able to regenerate it. FL passes out from the amount of magic she expends. When she wakes, Albert reveals that she likely has the backing of the most powerful light spirit, which is the epitome of healing magic. Albert uses his healing magic to help relieve the burden the magic had on FL's body, making her feel like he's familiar somehow.

FL's training continues, however she's started to get harassed by Madeline, the yandere fiance's side piece. FL would absolutely love to cancel the engagement, but still can't because she hasn't been able to meet up with Randall. At the end of her class she's asked to go somewhere with some of the students from the fire magic class. Of course they're taking her to Madeline, who insists that she give up Randall. FL is thinking "I've been trying!"  Randall discovers the scene and rather than stopping it right away, decides to wait and intervene in the hopes that FL will see him as her savior and view him favorably again, if only slightly.
More spoilers, as of 6/21.

Madeline starts ramping up a big fire spell, freaking her followers out. They try to intervene, which causes her to lose control of the spell. However before it can hurt her, Albert appears and is able to save FL. He basically tells Madeline to GTFO out of the school because it's forbidden to attack another student. Her followers are also expelled as well. Yuri asks if FL wants to crush all of their houses, which she doesn't. Randall is discovered crouching and just watching. He gets his ass handed to him by Yuri and Albert. FL takes the opportunity to tell him that the engagement is over, which upsets him. FL also realizes that she's in love with Albert.

While in class Yuri and FL talk about Albert, who is called away by another professor. Yuri mentions that FL should hurry up with her lessons so she can help with demon subjugation.

Table of Contents

FL is your stereotypical nondescript heroine. She comes from a Count family, as does her fiancé Randall (R). They're equal in status, but that's about it. He's described as incredibly good looking and very magically talented, plus apparently everyone who knows him likes him. FL on the other hand, can barely pass her fire magic classes and has zero friends, as everyone seems to shun or look down on her.

FL overhears R smack talking her and the engagement after class, as he's unaware that she's there. He treats the engagement as an unpleasant obligation and his friends bring up that he's got something going on with the beautiful daughter of a Marquis, Madeline (M). FL does eventually get spotted, but it's implied that they didn't know she overheard. She does act more distant, however, but she says she was sick.

FL starts trying to break the engagement, however her family is a bit hesitant since this would leave her without protection or (presumably) a way to care for herself in the future since no one would want to marry someone with low magical talent and apparently her job possibilities are very slim. Eventually her family brings this up with R's and he essentially sweettalks her and her family out of completely ending the engagement, instead just asking for time for everyone to consider alternatives and so on.

There's then a chapter from R's point of view. He's a total jerk, unsurprisingly, and a yandere. He's been deliberately making her dress and style herself so that she looks as nondescript as possible. He's also gone out of his way to keep others away from her and he takes great joy in seeing her rely completely on him - as well as her unhappiness. Where it goes even more into jerk territory is that he's pretty much aware that FL is much stronger than she seems, as normally magic is an either/or situation. FL was able to summon a spirit, which would normally give her at least regular level magic. As such, R suspects that the spirit is a rare spirit type that would use magic in a way completely different than the normal person. So in other words, the casting style she's been learning is useless for her actual magic type and the fact that she can use any magic at all (and even improve a little) is proof of her strong magic. His goal has always been to keep her downtrodden and under his control.

FL goes to a ball with R, where he essentially ignores her. She goes outside at one point, where she sees R kissing his secret girlfriend. This makes her upset, even though she has already planned to cancel the engagement, and she's discovered by Albert, a strong light magician. He soothes her and takes her home.

This all makes R super angry, as he's losing control. FL also confronts him and demands to cancel the engagement again, but it's held off once more. He tries saying that the girlfriend was forcing a kiss on him.

FL meets Yuri, a member of the royal family, and also runs into Albert again, who tells her that she's actually contracted to a rare light spirit. Everything that R was thinking about was basically true, in other words. She's taken into the light spirit class where she once again meets Yuri, a fellow light magic user.
They become her new friends and since they're both in super powerful positions, R can't scare them away from her. Of course he can't have the object of his obsession slipping away from him, so he pulls her aside and emotionally abuses her. She's scared of him now and absolutely no longer in love.
