Berserk Chapter 5 Discussion

Damn... I'm joining the "Theresia's going to die" club, but I really hope she doesn't. ._.



And yeah that was a REAL beat down Guts took. Wow.

I have difficulties to understand who the hell slug is supposed to be. At times, it talks or behaves as a mayor or father, at others it considers itself as a non-human species superior to mere humans.



The chapter was ok: more action and gross body (3/5)

Guts getting owned.

Guts sure got thrown around  a lot.

That face Guts makes when the demons talk about his mark and how his death is inevitable.. It makes things worth reading more to see his pain.

Theresia's situation offers insight into The Count. He succumbed to his inner demons when his wife fell victim to the cult and, as we already knew, his malice was amplified then. It seems his need for purity had also been amplified and distorted, leading him to cling to Theresia as a symbol of purity. This is manifested in his obsessive need to protect her from the corrupting influence of the outside world, a world that has already corrupted him. We're brought back to the cyclical nature of suffering.



As The Count tells Guts, one needs to aim for the head over and over again to find true resolution. The regenerative abilities of the demon speak to the necessity of confronting our deepest fears and traumas head-on. Superficially dealing with them is insufficient, as they will keep resurfacing.



There are a few symbolic elements involving Guts' sword in this fight. The demon attaches itself to the sword to feed off Guts' body, illustrating how it exploits Guts' traumas to defeat him. Yet, Guts manages to use his sword to crush the demon against a wall, reaffirming his ability to channel his struggles into strength and determination. By the end, The Count notes that Guts won't let go of his sword, which can portray his resilience and unwavering will, but also how his traumas have become an integral part of him. In the final scene, we see Guts without a hand on his sword, seemingly unconscious.
