I wonder what Gatts means.....
Basically it's like this. Guts was a lonely kid and his father figure merely used him and didn't really seem to appreciate him. Going to the battlefield and fighting for his survival was an escape for him from those emotions. So, he eventually met Griffith, a guy that really seemed to like him as a person. But, ever since Griffith's speech that time about his soldiers not being his equals because they don't fight for their dreams and only protect his....Guts felt as though he was inferior to him. And, in an effort to stand on the same ground with Griffith as an equal and friend, Guts wants to leave and find his own purpose in life...his own dream.
