It seems like you missed quite a lot of characterization for him. Miura has painstakingly tried his best to make Griffith into a sympathetic figure throughout the manga, showing his compassionate and dark side throughout, hell he was even shocked when the God Hand said that he offered the sacrifice.

yup, Griffith isn´t 100% evil (at least before transforming into Femto) but he DID everything wrong.

Yea, I saw his surprise but he kind of sort of still let his ambition rule over all. *shrugs*
