I feel like even if Fukubei was the original friend their is more to it now ... I mean the mastermind would never have put himself in harms way, right? Well this is weird, really don't know what to expect now.

Same and I wasn't spoiled. I really thought so when Fukubei and Sadakiyo fell from the building. I was still surprised when they revealed his face though!
