So they weren't strong enough to be mid tier and show the difference between them and Aizen? Wrong : o
Nope.
Its just that it was already clear that Aizen is godmode-level.
Now if we had some other villain BEFORE we found out that Aizen IS godmode level, then it would have worked way better.

Thats because Itachi was smart and did not spam susanoos amaterasus, bla bla bla. ALso I assume that before Kishi decided to go with 1tech-wonder-ninja-concept, Itachi survived because, you know, he had OTHER techniques and things he could rely on, instead of spaming eyes.
Sasuke on other hand, pretty much in every fight overused his eyes AND managed to escape the cost he would have to pay for that.
However that would have been all ok IF HE had learnt from his mistakes, however no. He(and Kishi) still believe that their way is correct.

Pre-book stuff Pain had a very strong and true position of human emotions, hatred, pain, suffering, etc, creating most of world problems and wars. Its something realistic and interesting. He also believed that there's no other method to change that than to create a hiroshima-effect.
It clashed perfectly against Naruto's wish to relieve the world from suffering, to make the world better.
Two ideals clashing.
And then it all turned into simplified "hatred bleeds hatred" vs "lets turn the other cheeck" two-dimensional phylosophy.
Even more. Now we have characters who use HATRED as their power and main who uses PEACE as his.

He pretty much went back to PartI VOTE Naruto, who bawls at sasuke and forgets his goals.
All his development through the chapters of building the future by your own hands, of relying on yourself and others, were destroyed.
He also put the whole hokage goal behind after hyperventilating and started some sort of nonsensical savior crusade. The manga was better off without that. The manga was awesome without black/white worldview. The manga was awesome when characters were believable and had more than 2d-personality
Pain? Pain was awesome character.
Zabuza? Zabuza too.
Remember how Naruto handled the whole bridge assault? Thats more realistic portrayal of hope for future.
How Naruto handled Nagato? Thats cartoony portrayal of world at the level of digimon stuff.

Well that was the 02 finale, 02's finale sucked - we all know that.
But if you'd watched the rest of 02's finale, you'd have noticed that Belial Vamdemon is insanely powerful due to the presence of a crapload of darkness, which the show doesn't take five minutes to explain the presence of. During this, despite not being strong enough to be one of the Seven Great Demon Lords, he is able to take out Imperialdramon Fighter, of which nearly every card is stronger than Baihumon officially declared the strongest of the Four Holy Beast Digimon, and is then defeated by a bunch of kids TALKING. You tell me what's cheaper, THAT or Naruto.
DARKNESS = Hatred.
Followers of Darkness = Uchiha
BellalVamdemon = "Madara"/Jyuubi
Kids talking = Ninja following Naruto's way.
Believe it or not, but Naruto's finalle will be just like that.
Imagine all the ninja hugging and talking about love, not war and Jyuubi weakening/vanishing from that. tadam.

At least Aizen(hypnosis, reality warping device and, you know, power) has power to back up his xanathos roulette, while Madara pretty much is FAIL and yet everything always goes "according to his plan" you just watch - Madara will proclaim in this flashback that he did what he did so as to make sure that whatever his endgame is will go just as planned.
I bet he planned Naruto and Sauce fighting each other too and he needs that too(watch for "sauce has second half of kyuubi sealed in him" crap)for his plans.
ANd btw, why are we still calling him Madara? since, you know, we already know that he is NOT Madara. Yea, because Aizen is a God-Mode Sue everything that he does is justifiable. One of Madara's goals is Destroy Konoha and Konoha is stil standing sort ofl despite the fact that he wanted it gone for maybe 40+ years.
