Not quite the end of the arc but definitely the emotional climax, and one I think they nailed. The school illusion was kinda weird, from what I remember of the anime and what I've since skimmed, they didn't include it, instead they did a different dream that more closely followed his time in the Volts. I kinda prefer this weird school thing though I don't entirely get the correlation. It definitely showed Makubex as a good person, not giving into the bully peer pressure and saving him, and I guess in that regret, it makes his pain at losing them work too, since he cared despite how awful they were. And how awful they were did give him provocation to act rashly, so maybe it's more of a metaphor for how he his plans came about in this arc, and the fact that the illusion was so widely different from the life he knew, probably works in tandem with his existential dread. Either way, it's clear he wanted his whole old life back with his final declaration, and I guess prefer it this way over the more direct approach because the emotions are still palpable, just less on the nose. Also, Makubex death in desert dream death thing here, was gruesome, I'm down with it.
Beyond that, I really just like the whole stuff anyway. Ban's "Even if this is all just a dream, your sadness is real, right?" was a hard hitting line and I liked how they built up to it. With how they obscure Makubex's face in the panels leading up to it then deliver the full face expression as Ban hits the wham line. Then Makubex attempts suicide, definitely not your typical run of the mill shonen antagonist, and Ginji prevents him with love. The whole "I'll be sad. Isn't that enough?" definitely lands, I've been told that myself before. Suicide stories just always resonate stronger with me, and I like it being explored here, especially with the main antagonist of the arc, it's a lot more interesting. This chapter made me tear up.
