Although a lot of people may think about it as an asspull, But I think the last panel of this page perfectly describes the whole thing:

What do people think about this power of Gon's? I see some regard it as an asspull, do you agree? I mean does it not make sense that an older gon would beat Pitou? And that enhancement can reach such growth with over-doing the 100% rule like Netero did?I think it's perfectly in-line with nen's rules. Gon's rage and determination has had a long, gradual build-up ever since Kite died, and it reached a exploding-point with Pitou when he/she admitted Kite was dead. Of course, Gon's abilities had grown a lot too, with a more intricate understanding of both nen in general and his latent potential. Gon's shown to have nearly unparalleled potential for growth, and would definitely become one of the strongest nen-users one day. As stated by Pitou before his/her death, he knowingly sacrificed all of it so that he may massacre the object of his rage and despair - and likely, it might not have taken much less to take out a determined Pitou.

i feel like gon is coming closer and closer to netero. as opposed to immersing himself in training for so long, gon is growing through his fight

Um...anyone who would think that doesn't really understand what just happened.  Gon's growth was unnatural and potentially may result in both his body and nen being crippled for life (well, probably not, seeing as he's the main character and all, but it's definitely a major setback), and his sudden aging, if it can't be reversed, means that he's probably just lost ten to fifteen years of his life.

This wasn't growing through a fight, it was a horrific side-effect of Gon's emotional trauma.

On another forum I hang out at there's been quite a lot of screaming about how the whole series is ruined now and Gon isn't Gon, and I'm sitting there going "good job Togashi-sensei" because the point of telling a story is to have a strong emotional effect on the reader.   Gon is such a beloved character that this chapter hit most people like a punch in the gut (myself included).  It took me a few days to even figure out how I felt about it and whether or not I thought it was a good plot twist.  (Obviously, from what I'm saying, I've decided that it was good)

Though, call me jaded, but I suspected that Gon would have some kind of major trauma and/or loss of innocence at some point since waaaaay back in the York Shin arc (around the same time Gon and Killua were captured by the Genei Ryoudan).  Nice to know my instincts are as good as ever (but a little boring - I don't get genuinely surprised by plot twists very often).

Wow, epic chapter is friggin epic. Gon is just so frigin awesome when he's overcome with sadness; it felt real and the way he looked back at Killua like that...total win. There are too many loose strings left to end the series (Hisoka, Chrono, leorio and kurapika, his father).

HxH a little while longer.

But damn I wish Neferpitou had joined instead of dying like that. Epic loss though

End is nigh.

So who's predicting Gon will either:

1 - never be able to use Nen again

2 - die.

It seems to me pretty dark where this is going....
