Gintama Chapter 703 Discussion

One last chapter to go, I can't say if I'm happy or sad because the manga is ending but I really hope it gets a great ending.

A single drop of tear was shed by Gintoki, yet my eyes are all red and swollen... T_T

This is the benchmark that any shounen manga should strive for. I have read my share of manga, novels, books but I never came across another story so captivating where I felt so invested to the characters.

People may argue whether it is One Piece or Shingeki no Kyojin or even Fullmetal Alchemist, but to me Gintama is by far and wide, the greatest shounen manga of all time and nothing will ever surpass it.

But I wonder if Shoyo will really make it out alive, or if he'll end up sacrificing himself in one way. Shoyo is already a dead man walking, remember his heart was already stabbed and Hitsugi was wishing that utsuro and all those with his blood are able to have a peaceful final hoursTrue, even in this chapter they mentioned that he doesn't have much time left. But I wonder if he'll die before escaping by sacrificing himself for something, or he makes it out, then dies "naturally" later on.

This is the second time Takasugi stabbed himself. Once to extend his life, and once to end it. This is also the second time Gintoki shed a tear. Once when he sacrificed his master and once when he sacrificed his comrade.

Tama said that he's crying when she's almost broken because of Kintoki, wasn't she? And that graveyard scene with Otose also kinda implying that he cried from his mouth movement.I guess they were never clear about those moments. Tama could've meant that as a joke or he was about to tear up. And during the Otose scene, he's clearly upset, but he didn't cry. His mouth wavers for a bit, and then stops, which meant that he was about to cry, but held it in. There's only two moments where Gintoki is clearly shown crying.

I wanna call this chapter bittersweet, but it's just too bitter for me. For Gintoki to save his comrades in exchange for his master, only to sacrifice his comrade for the sake of his master. Takasugi was destined to die, since Oboro's remains only extended his life. But still, this is just really fucking sad. We never did get a moment of Takasugi relaxing and spending time with his old comrades. The last thing Takasugi with his left eye was Gintoki crying, and the last thing he saw with his right eye was Gintoki smiling back at him.

Also, this is just too much T_T

Shinpachi talking with Shoyo-sensei is something I'd never imagine would be a thing in Gintama, but I guess it is now. In some ways, it's feels a bit weird just because of how they don't know each other, yet they kinda understand each other. They both depended on Gintoki after all. Shinpachi's grateful for Shoyo raising Gintoki, but I'm pretty sure Shoyo's grateful for the Yorozuya being there for Gintoki when he was all alone post-Joui war. But I wonder if Shoyo will really make it out alive, or if he'll end up sacrificing himself in one way. Sigh, I wouldn't be surprised if the stupid gorilla wants to make this any more depressing, but I really think the final chapter will serve as an epilogue with some sort of short timeskip.

There's certain chapters and episodes of Gintama I don't like rereading or rewatching because I don't enjoy crippling depression. This is now one of them.

At last! Takasugi had a great farewell. Probably the best in Gintama. It made my eyes wet. That scene when he saw the smiling face of Gintoki for the last time was so emotional.

So Sorachi finally manages to wind it up??!

Waiting for the final lesson with some teardrops..
