I'm glad that Yazawa didn't commit suicide, would've felt a little out of place to be honest.
In a way I'm really surprised about all the dramatic and sad flashbacks; I really didn't expect anything serious like that in the beginning.
But I'm really glad that Inoue sensei added another layer of depth and a stonger sense of realism to Slam Dunk through this.
Whether it was Mitsui's redemption arc, Sakuragi's father, Uozumi's past or Antai sensei's past; they were really well executed and fortunately never came off as cheap or overly dramatic to me (which is remarkable since Inoue sensei could've easily gone for more melodrama and tearjerkers etc.)
