Pokémon Special Chapter 441 Discussion

  • #2
So this is the end of the Platinum arc (and the whole Sinnoh saga).

This arc is short and fun. It ends in the way that's satisfying. Ngl, I miss "speaking of pokemon" from dia and pearl. 9/10.

Current ranking: RS > RGB > GSC > FRLG > DP = Pt = Y > E

Onto HGSS!

Looks like Charon got outsmarted by Rotom in form of a toy. Happy ending with the pokemon returning to their places and others staying with trainers. Researchers searching on forms and the duo preforming for Platina. Nice revisit to the daycare couple and seems that next arc up is HGSS as Gold gets mentioned.

First things first - I love this manga. This is indeed what Pokemon anime should be like - big, faithful to the games and having huge but developed and likeable cast of characters.

There are people liking that one pokemon anime as it is, but indeed I would loved an anime that was based on the games just like Pokemon origin (with some more story than fast pacing). In this manga you can clearly tell every character from each other based on personality and achievements. Same with the arcs. Makes it very enjoyable.

That being said, I'm so glad the Diamond/Pearl and Platinum arcs are over. The story behind the Sinnoh games is absolutely ridiculous and the manga couldn't help much. Don't get me wrong, I like the characters - as usual even the villains are really interesting - but recreating the universe using Pokemon that control time and space... I'm sorry, you can't make it as great as the previous stories were.

Don't see why that's ridiculous given Kyogre and Groudon can change a planet if awakened. This arc had more a fun aspect to it than the previous ones. The others were more rivalry between friends while this one were more like a friend group just travelling together and dumped into an evil organisation. They also had a goal similar to Magma and Aqua. The RS arc was one of the darkest arcs in my opinion as many people were killed for the goal of those organisations. And also because of how high the stakes were I also thought it was one of the most intense and exciting one to read, as in the Red/Blue/Green only pokemon died. With that said comparing this arc and previous arcs is like comparing things that doesn't necessarily look alike. The characters in this one for example was also less experienced than the previous pokedex holders. In fact felt a bit more like how you started your first pokemon game. Unsure, excited. Something the earlier pokedex holders didn't seem to have. Platina mainly ' book knowledge' before her journey and Pearl was the only one who seemed experienced. While Diamond was the average trainer. Was thinking they would have more trouble since their opponents were time and space also due to some lack of experience but somehow they managed. Don't think it failed as an arc, but the time space dilemma lacked some impact to make it up to where the Kyogre/Groudon disaster was. As in you could definitely see how disastrous the outcome was. With the time space people walked out the door and ended up in another city.

alright, i have waited to post this DP arc final post when i finish the whole arc, since it's combined anyway in the VIZ as diamond-pearl-platinum, and it's not really matter since the platinum chapter feels as an extension and more like an attempt to make different arc than before, but it quickly scrapped to be proper sequel to DP, which is what it was already.

my main complaint for this entire arc is this - the DP arc is started as more "gag" theme story. diamond and pearl are comedian, pokemon trainer also, but the overall theme wasn't very serious.

would i want diamond and pearl to be a heroes? of course i anticipated that, but the result are, that i'm actually would be satisfied if platinum would have her own arc. she's enough serious to do that, unlike diamond and pearl.

but no, in the end they all gotta be heroes.

the first downfall for me is their splitting, from there this arc became something it didn't wanted to be thus far - serious.

and this also shows how Kusaka writing skills probably weren't ready for making the legendaries story around those characters. it resulted in climax at the top of mt. coronet being in much smaller scale than what kyogre and groudon had been in RS arc. and this is for legendaries that supposed to be in much greater scale than kyogre and groudon, which just makes this whole climax, hrm, sucks.

it ended of course with the end of platinum, but instead making the end straightforward, they had to make a "new" chapter for the closure of the story. why? just why? so this whole DPePl arc gonna be much longer than it already was?

this resulting in and arc that has many weaknesses, and main strength that make this arc worth, only that this strength is weaken at the point mentioned above - friendship and gang.

this is the first arc in the adventure/special manga that the main characters actually traveling together, and also have the best chemistry among friends in the manga (i say "friends", because i believe ruby and sapphire has its own unique chemistry). it's not that the characters themself are the best, but together, they just bring a unique story of friendship, that when dramatic things happened between them, it just hit me in the heart.

which is just a shame really that all this idea tearing itself apart, because the manga needs serious "heroes", and ending up with clashing legendaries without real depth into it.

the reason why zapdos-moltres-articuno combination was unique, mewteo capture story, lugia and ho-oh, was impactful, is because those legendaries were serious business, not just "ah, those are legendaries, so they suppose to be tough", theyr encounter had lots of depth into it. and there there was kyogre vs groudon which just was 2 beasts that no one could even touch, let alone battle. what DPePl did is taming the whole legendaries terms, in a way the manga never did. the trilogy DP movies did much more justice to those legendaries, just watch their opening scenes.

but that's not really the problem.

the problem is, that if the manga could'v maintain the whole "gag action" theme without going too serious, and even ditching the game story in favor of platinum taking gym battles with dia and pearl, that would totally fine by me.

problem is, it didn't, and so this became the first arc that actually made me take long break from the manga for quite a while. no, not emerald that actually had good epic ending. yes, i like how this arc concluded, but it didn't screamed epic as the previous arcs did. its also not helping that DPePl was the longest main arc until now, only because of changing pace.

i did enjoyed it for what it was, but it definitely among my bottom ranking arcs:

RGB = RS > GSC > Y > FRLG > DPePl = E

----------------------------------------

First things first - I love this manga. This is indeed what Pokemon anime should be like - big, faithful to the games and having huge but developed and likable cast of characters.

Geez, and I thought Ruby and Sapphire were too much with their land and water controlling Pokemon... I'm so glad Zekrom and Reshiram are just incredibly powerful Pokemon of legends. This aspect of Black and White is kind of like a fairytale - heroes, dragons, legends coming to life... And it works so much better than the whole "recreating the world" stuff.

Now it's time for Heart Gold and Soul Silver arcs. I don't think I need to say it but Gold/Silver/Crystal arc was probably the best one out of all of them so far (mostly because it was so big and had everybody - and so much suspence). I wonder what element will be incorporated - in case of Fire Red and Leaf Green it was Sevii Islands and Deoxys... And I wonder if THAT PERSON will somehow return. I hope not. The scene of their disappearance was just beautiful and an epic tearjerker.

(Yes, I know HGSS manga is already being published but unfortunately I have to wait for English translations, so I know nothing about it yet)

EDIT: As absurd as the story of the Sinnoh arc was - this last page made me realize how I like the characters. They couldn't end it better than with a simple: "Speaking of Pokemon...!"
