The Spriggan 12 didn't really affect how we go to this point of the arc. The chess board is reset to how it was before the invasion. Except for Makarov's sacrifice, and it wasn't even at the hands of a Spriggan, but he did it to wipe out the fodder soldiers. At this point, it would have made no difference if Zeref alone and Acnologia had showed up at Fairy Tail's door (minus the useless Spriggan 12 and the million men army).
Ishgar's Wizard Saints... where are they? Kinda disappointing to take on that title to get taken out by God Serena, and then never appear again in the rest of the arc. Though, I think they will come back again in the Fairy Tail movie Dragon Cry (Hyberion is in the trailer).
Anyway, I hope there would be more backstory about Acnologia. My prediction is that the timelapse plan would fail, so that the 5 dragon slayers have a chance to actually fight him (which is the whole purpose of them being brought to the future in the first place). I predict that they would not be strong enough to defeat Acnologia, but their role is to push / lure Acnologia into the trap. That would be a satisfactory ending.

Do you even magic, bro? So Acno, supposely one of the strongest creatures in the manga, can't notice an alteration of the state of matter (that's what magic basically is) and find a way to cancel or revert it? Or at least acknowledge it?
Oh, of course, Fairy Sphere is absolute defense bullshit magic like Fairy Law and other deus ex machina spells Mavis created. And it is me that don't understand.
There could be two explanations to this.
When Acnologia showed up in front of Erza and Wendy (and stomped on Eileen's corpse), Erza did notice that his magic power was somehow different than back in Tenrou. I think it is likely that in the 7 years time gap (or after the Tartaros arc when he lost his arm), that Acnologia may have gained additional powers. This may explain why Acnologia could previously only tank attacks against him (but never shown to be able to eat magic), but now he has the extra capability to eat magic on top of his already formidable durability.
I think it is most likely that he developed the power to eat all kinds of magic after his encounter with Igneel which cost him his arm in the Tartaros arc. Perhaps after that encounter, he realized he's not all that invulnerable after all, so he may be trying to gain some sort of invulnerability by making all magic attacks against him useless.
Or, it could be simply that Mashima's writing is inconsistent...

If Acnologia can "eat" all magic how can he not have cancelled that spell that froze Tenroujima for 7 years.
