Ugh, this arc is unfolding just like all the others. Hopes brutally murdered.
Step 1. Introduce powerful new threat
Step 2. Fairy Tail says "We'll fight them!!"
Step 3. Villains make their appearance acting cocky as hell boasting their enormous powers.
Step 4. Villains proceed to defeat Fairy Tail in fight (but everyone is ok enough to fight later).
Step 5. Fairy Tail comes back to fight, but now the differences in power are drastically lessened.
Step 6. Regular Fairy Tail fight ensues with slight back and forth until Fairy Tail pulls out a victory.
Step 7. Rinse and repeat.
I was really hoping this arc could move away from this mold, but this chapter denies such hopes... >.>
....That just sounds like an average shounen arc. Which is honestly the only formula shounens can even do besides tournament arcs. It just depends on execution. Honestly, I can't even remember a villain in FT that wasn't defeated as soon as he found an opponent since Oracion Seis. Edolas villains were never like that even though the villains in that arc were a bunch of jokes anyway, Grimoire Heart members weren't like that, the GMG was the tournament arc, Tartaros wasn't like that (Infact, majority of Tartaros members didn't even get a second fight), Avatar was barely even made out to be a threat. So I personally think this arc's doing just fine so far, if it not amazing since we even have an underling of the main villains be a threat.
No, with Grimoire Heart and parts of GMG even if there weren't separate fights, they generally followed this pattern. Cocky opponent, opponent gets the lead, FT wins. Tartaros was different, that's why it was my favorite arc. I was hoping this arc could also be different, but its setting itself up to be exactly the same. I was hoping for a legitimate war, but it's still just the Fairy Tail splinter team at this juncture. Granted, these are early thoughts, but I'm judging based off past trends and the path this arc is following.
